Percale sheets are sheets with a thread count above 200. Thread count is the term used to measure the fineness or coarseness of woven fabric. It is referred to as “threads per inch” or TPI.
How is the thread count measured?
Both the length (warp) and the width (weft) threads in a square inch of the fabric is counted and added together. If this count is above 200 the fabric is considered “percale”.
The thread count is an indication of the quality of the fabric. A thread count of 150 is considered “standard” while a thread count of 180 and above is considered “good quality”. A thread count of 200 and above is referred to as “percale” and considered the highest quality of fabric.
It is important to note the the term “percale” only refers to the weave of the fabric and not its content. Percale sheets may be 100% cotton, a blend of 50% cotton and 50 % polyester or even a blend of other fabrics in any ratio.
Why buy percale sheets? What is so special about them?
A thread count of 200 or higher means that the fabric is very tightly woven. This results in a firm, smooth fabric with no gloss. It warps and washes very well which means that it will last for many years.
I’ve seen percale cotton sheets with an extremely high thread count of 1000. What does that mean?
For marketing purposes, they sometimes count the threads as follows. If 250 2-ply yarns were used to weave the fabric, and the individual yarns were counted in both horizontal and vertical direction a thread count of 1000 is counted. In reality, the thread count should be stated as 500, which is still very high and a fabric of very high quality.
