Do you want your bedding to be the centerpiece of your bedroom? Or do you want your duvet cover to blend in with the rest of the decor theme? Or do you want something inbetween?

What material do you want?
These days, cotton is the benchmark. Frankly, it’s nice to sleep between cotton: cool, crisp, clean. Price-wise, it is more expensive than the artificial materials and organic cotton has a premium price.
Polyester and polyester mixes are typically easier to launder, and shouldn’t need pressing. You may get overly warm and perspire when you sleep in these fabrics. Generally polyester-based fabrics are more budget-friendly.
Linen can be nice, though some people find it scratchy on their skin.
For real luxury, try silks and satins. Their purchase prices can be higher. Check the Washing Instructions: they can need care and attention in the laundry.

And on the subject of fabric, be careful of buying curtains as part of the set. Bedding needs to be laundered every week, not so curtains. Curtains need to hang nicely against the window and absorb light. So bedding and curtain fabrics need to have very different qualities.

My Rule of Thumb is to err on the side of caution. Buy something that is a bit more conservative than you judge their taste to be.
Do they want something that is going to be a centerpiece for their bedroom, something warm and cheering? 
Or do they want something more subtle, something that blends in?

Be fabric-wise: don’t risk buying a polyester mix or a linen blend. 
Polyester can cause perspiration. It is, however, more washable than most other materials.
Linen is an acquired taste. Some people find it too scratchy.
The more conservative choice is pure cotton, preferably “organic” cotton.

And on the subject of fabric, be careful of buying curtains as part of the set: curtain fabric needs to have very different laundry and light-absorbing qualities compared with bedding. A solution would be to buy curtains that deliberately blend in with the bedding, like something from the Waverly range.

Buy a Double Duvet Cover Set of reasonable quality.  The seaming and the pattern need to stay in place for a few years. You don’t want the embarrassment of a bedding malfunction in a month or two.

The word  “duvet” is derived from the French word duvet for the down from geese, ducks and suchlike. Traditionally duvets were made in Europe from the down of the eiderduck.
Growing up in London, my family referred to comforters as “eiderdowns” until the “duvet” concept with a washable cover became popular in the 1960′s.

The higher the tog, the more insulation the duvet provides. Summer duvets therefore have a lower tog count than winter duvets. Look for lightweight summer duvet tog ratings around 4 or 5; winter duvets 12 togs upwards; and compromise duvets somewhere between.

Natural filling – feathers and down – appear to be more luxurious, but is the sleeper allergic to these materials? Synthetic fillings tend to be a lot cheaper.

“Blocking” and “channeling” sound very technical. Channeling refers to the seams sewn down the length of the duvet to keep the filling in place and stops shifting from one side to the other. Blocking – a more expensive option – traps the filling in blocks to give uniform warmth under the duvet.

Pure cotton is the best fabric to sleep under. It is cool in summer, and does not cause perspiration as synthetic fabrics do. Look for a thread count of 280 (threads per square centimetre) for a top quality duvet bag.
If the thread count is too low, filling will “leak” away, spoiling the duvet and creating a mess.

Buy your double duvet set with confidence from a really reliable supplier.

1. Lay the duvet flat on the bed. Turn the cover inside out., and lay it on top of the duvet. Ensure the cover’s fastenings are fully undone
2. Find the seams of the cover. Straighten the seams to make sure the cover is flat. It’s difficult to change the cover if it is twisted
3. Put your arms inside the cover. Follow the seams up until you can grip the corners
4. Through the cover’s corners, hold the corners of the duvet. Shake the cover on to the duvet. Hold the corners tight
5. To shake the cover all the way on, shake the duvet over a chair, a bannister, from a bunk bed or anything higher
6. Pull the last of the cover over the bottom of the duvet. Tuck in in the corners
7. Redo the fastenings

And there you are – job done.
